Tap, filtered, mineral, or demineralised — which water belongs in your whisky?
Four kinds of water sit within reach of every whisky drinker, and only one is built for the job. Here is what each does to a dram — and why the water that tastes best on its own is the wrong one to pour into a single malt.

The best water to add to whisky is the one that changes the strength and nothing else — which means a water with almost no dissolved minerals: demineralised, deionised, or reverse-osmosis water. Tap water carries chlorine and a variable mineral load, a carbon filter cleans up the taste but leaves most of the minerals behind, and natural mineral water is defined by the very minerals you do not want in a fine dram. The counter-intuitive rule of thumb: the water that tastes best on its own is usually the wrong water for whisky.
Why does the type of water matter at all?
Because water is not a bystander in the glass. When you add a splash to a cask-strength single malt you can easily make water a third or more of what you are drinking, and everything dissolved in that water comes along for the pour.
Two things happen when water meets whisky. First, lowering the alcohol concentration releases aromatic compounds — the 2017 study in Scientific Reports on guaiacol migration is the most-cited explanation of why a drop of water “opens up” a dram, a mechanism we cover in why water opens whisky. Any water does that job, because it is driven by dilution alone. Second — and this is where the waters diverge — whatever minerals the water carries are now in the glass with the spirit. Calcium interacts with oak tannins and reads as bitterness and astringency; sodium above roughly 30 mg/L adds a metallic edge; and dissolved calcium can even trigger a faint haze, or “floc,” in a proofed spirit. A distiller spent years balancing that liquid. The wrong water quietly re-balances it.
So the question is not really “which water opens whisky” — they all do. It is “which water opens whisky without contributing anything of its own.” Rank the four by dissolved-mineral content and the answer falls out.
Tap water: convenient, but it brings baggage
Tap water is treated municipal water, and its two problems are disinfectant and minerals.
The disinfectant is the one you can smell. Public supplies are dosed with chlorine or chloramine to stay safe on the journey to your tap, and the human nose is remarkably sensitive to it. The World Health Organization notes that most people can taste or smell chlorine in drinking water “well below 5 mg/l, and some at levels as low as 0.3 mg/l,” while chloramine is detectable from roughly 0.5 mg/L (WHO, Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality). Those are exactly the residual levels a treated supply is designed to carry. In a glass of water it reads as “clean municipal water.” Poured into a delicate Speyside malt, it reads as a chlorinous top-note the distiller never intended.
The minerals are the problem you cannot smell. Under India’s drinking-water standard, IS 10500:2012, treated tap water is considered acceptable up to 500 mg/L of total dissolved solids and, in the absence of an alternative source, tolerable all the way to 2,000 mg/L, across a pH band of 6.5–8.5 (Bureau of Indian Standards, IS 10500:2012). “Safe to drink” and “neutral in whisky” are different bars entirely: perfectly compliant tap water can still be hard enough to blunt a dram. For finishing whisky, tap water is the water to avoid.
Filtered water: better to drink, barely changed underneath
“Filtered” almost always means a jug filter or a tap-mounted cartridge built around activated carbon. Carbon is genuinely good at what it does: it adsorbs chlorine, chloramine, and many of the organic compounds behind off-tastes and odours, which is why filtered tap water tastes noticeably cleaner.
But carbon filtration does very little to the dissolved minerals. Calcium, magnesium, sodium, and the other ions that make up most of a water’s TDS are far too small and too soluble for a standard carbon filter to catch — they pass straight through. So a jug filter fixes the chlorine problem and leaves the hardness problem almost untouched. Filtered water is a real improvement on tap for drinking, and a real improvement on tap for whisky, but it is not a neutral, mineral-free water. If your tap runs hard, your filtered water is still hard. (Reverse-osmosis home units are a different technology entirely — see demineralised water, below.)
Mineral water: the wrong tool, by definition
Here is the trap that catches careful drinkers: reaching for an expensive bottled mineral water because it seems like the “premium” choice. The problem is in the name.
Under the international Codex Standard for Natural Mineral Waters (CXS 108-1981) — the basis for India’s IS 13428 — natural mineral water is defined by “its content of certain mineral salts and their relative proportions and the presence of trace elements,” drawn from a protected underground source and bottled with minimal treatment so those minerals are preserved. In other words, a natural mineral water is sold on the strength of exactly the calcium, magnesium, sodium, and bicarbonates you are trying to keep out of a fine whisky. Its whole identity is the fingerprint it leaves.
That fingerprint is a virtue in a glass on its own. The WHO considers water with a TDS below about 600 mg/L “good” to drink, becoming “significantly and increasingly unpalatable” above roughly 1,000 mg/L — because a moderate dose of minerals is what makes water taste characterful and alive. Pour that same characterful water into a single malt, though, and its character competes with the spirit’s. The better it tastes by itself, the more it has to say — and the more it talks over the whisky.
Demineralised water: the distiller’s choice
Demineralised water — also called deionised (DI) or, loosely, reverse-osmosis water — has had its dissolved minerals stripped out. Ion-exchange resins swap the mineral ions for the hydrogen and hydroxide that simply make more water; the ASTM D1193 reagent-water specification classifies high-grade demineralised water by an electrical conductivity below a few microsiemens per centimetre, which corresponds to a TDS effectively at zero. Reverse osmosis reaches a similar place by a different route, forcing water through a membrane that rejects 90–99% of dissolved solids, which is why the U.S. EPA lists point-of-use RO among the most effective home treatments for reducing dissolved contaminants.
The result is water that is close to flavourless and close to pH-neutral — and that is exactly why it is the water distilleries use to proof a spirit down from cask strength to bottling strength. The Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 permit only two things to be added to matured Scotch — water and plain caramel colouring — and set a floor of 40% ABV (legislation.gov.uk); when water is the single largest addition allowed, distilleries choose the version that dilutes the alcohol and contributes nothing else. That is the whole logic of a purpose-built blending water. For the drinker adding a few drops at the bar or at home, the principle is identical, just at a smaller scale: reach for the least characterful water you can find.
So which water should you actually use?

The pattern is a straight line: the less a water carries, the less it can distort. Demineralised, deionised, and reverse-osmosis waters sit at the low-mineral end and are the right tools for opening a dram cleanly. Everything to the right of them trades neutrality for character you did not ask for. It is the same reasoning we used when we built Plezure as a still water held below 50 mg/L TDS — low enough to open a whisky without leaving a fingerprint on it.

Frequently asked questions
Is bottled mineral water good for diluting whisky? Not especially. By definition it carries a deliberate mineral load — calcium, magnesium, sodium — and those minerals add bitterness, a metallic edge, or astringency to a spirit that was balanced without them. It is excellent to drink on its own; that is a different job.
Does a Brita-style jug filter make tap water safe for whisky? It helps, because activated carbon removes most of the chlorine that would otherwise show up as an off-note. But carbon leaves the dissolved minerals largely in place, so if your tap water is hard, the filtered version is still hard. It is a step up from tap, not a neutral water.
Is distilled water the same as demineralised water? They arrive at a similar end — very low mineral content — by different routes. Distillation boils water and re-condenses the vapour; demineralisation and reverse osmosis strip the minerals out cold. For adding to whisky, what matters is the shared result: almost no dissolved minerals, so almost nothing added but dilution.
Won’t near-zero-mineral water taste “flat” or “dead”? On its own, low-TDS water tastes less lively than mineral water — the WHO rates a moderate mineral level as more palatable to drink. But that is exactly the point when you are diluting whisky. You want the water to recede so the spirit can speak. Neutral is the feature, not a flaw.
How much water should I add? Only ever a little at a time. Add a few drops, nose and taste, then repeat. The right amount depends on the whisky’s strength and your own palate — the water’s job is to lower the ABV and release aroma, not to drown the dram.
