Every warehouse leaks. What is less obvious is that it leaks different things in different climates — and the ratio of alcohol to water in that loss decides whether a cask comes out stronger or weaker than it went in. That single number sets how much blending water a bottling needs, how many bottles a cask yields, and in humid warehouses, whether the spirit is still legally whisky at all.

Every guide to whisky and water talks about the water added at bottling. Almost none mention the first reduction — the one that happens before maturation, when new-make spirit is cut from still strength to filling strength and then left alone with oak for a decade.
